Several months ago, the collector of Apple prototypes, Kosutami, unveiled the initial images of a HomePod prototype featuring an LCD display on the top. Subsequently, independent sources have confirmed that this prototype is likely intended for an upcoming generation of the HomePod. Kosutami has recently released additional images of the HomePod prototype with an LCD display.
HomePod is about to get an LCD display
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kosutami provided additional insights into this prototype HomePod. The collector noted that the model, identified as B720, shares identical dimensions and design with the second-generation HomePod introduced earlier this year. The display area at the top remains the same size as well, with the noteworthy distinction being the incorporation of an LCD.
Existing HomePod models lack an LCD, utilizing a combination of LEDs capable of displaying various colors. Nonetheless, in an effort to enhance the product’s appeal to consumers, Apple has been actively developing new iterations of the HomePod featuring a fully functional display.
The screen appears to have a flat surface, yet Kosutami indicates that it will be protected by convex glass, as evident in the prototype image shared in October. While the specific interface details remain unclear, 9to5Mac has previously discovered that the screen will display essential information regarding media playback in applications like Apple Music and Apple Podcasts.
The HomePod’s display might also serve for crucial notifications, potentially enabling users to respond to phone calls and messages. Apple has internally explored several HomePod prototypes featuring displays, with one resembling an Amazon Echo Show. However, the leaked B720 prototype from Kosutami appears more likely to be unveiled in the near future, while more ambitious concepts may take longer to materialize.
Nevertheless, it’s essential to note that Apple could ultimately abandon the prototype and treat it as if it never existed. What are your thoughts on the concept of a HomePod featuring an LCD display on top? Share your opinions in the comments section below.
