With CES 2024 just around the corner, LG Display has introduced a cutting-edge gaming monitor, touted as the fastest display ever announced with an impressive refresh rate of 480Hz. In an official press release, LG disclosed that the new gaming monitor comes in a 27-inch size and boasts a resolution of 1440p. While similar features may be available in products from various brands, the standout feature of this monitor is its exceptionally high refresh rate, a remarkable achievement for a 1440p resolution display.
LG had earlier revealed another gaming monitor with a 480Hz refresh rate a few weeks ago, which belongs to its UltraGear series of displays. This previously announced monitor, despite its larger 32-inch size and impressive 4K resolution, comes with some noteworthy drawbacks. Notably, it can only achieve the higher refresh rate by downgrading the resolution to 1080p.
These monitors position themselves at the pinnacle of the gaming monitor spectrum. In fact, many personal computers fall short of matching the frame rates that these new monitors can output, with 120fps typically representing the upper limit in most cases.
Inevitably, the adoption of 480Hz refresh rates seems poised to become an industry norm, considering that 360Hz refresh rate monitors are already on the market. These heightened refresh rates empower gamers to showcase frames per second (FPS) well above the conventional 60fps, making them particularly well-suited for dynamic game genres like action games and racing simulations.
Details regarding the new LG monitor are currently sparse, including whether it supports G-Sync and/or FreeSync, and information about the available ports on the display. However, an intriguing aspect is highlighted: the company claims that this specific monitor emits the “lowest level of blue light in the industry.” This suggests potential benefits beyond improved frame rates, such as reduced eye fatigue.
As of now, LG has not disclosed the release date, pricing, or the official name of the product. With CES scheduled to commence on January 9th, additional details are anticipated to be unveiled soon.
