On Monday night, the Toronto Raptors hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers in Canada, marking the debut of RJ Barrett, recently traded from the New York Knicks.
Before the game, the former Duke star spoke with the media, and one of his quotes gained traction on social media.
Barrett expressed, “I grew up a Raptors fan all my life, so to come here and put this jersey on, it’s gonna be great.” Hailing from Toronto, Barrett was the third pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and had spent his entire career with the New York Knicks.
During his time with the Knicks, Barrett played a key role in leading the franchise to the NBA playoffs in two of the previous three seasons. Currently, he is averaging 18.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 42.3% from the field and 33.1% from three-point range in 26 games.
Barrett has now joined a Raptors team that holds the 12th seed in the Eastern Conference with a 12-20 record in their first 32 games. They are 3-7 in their last ten games and are in the midst of a two-game losing streak, with their most recent defeat coming against the Detroit Pistons with a score of 129-127.
Following their matchup with the Cavaliers, the Raptors are set to visit Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night in Tennessee.
While the Raptors clinched the 2019 NBA Championship against the Golden State Warriors, they have struggled in the postseason since that season, managing to win only one playoff series. Last year, the franchise missed the NBA playoffs for the second time in three seasons.
